Ultimate Spinach - (Ballad Of The) Hip Death Goddess

I guess the best way to describe this is daggy psychedelia. Ultimate Spinach were acolytes of folk rock and San Francisco style psych but they were far from the happening scenes of the day (Texas, San Fran, LA etc.) as they were Bostonians. They are the sort of band that never quite make the grade with regard to lists of psych but often rate a mention as second tier runners up that might be worth a listen once you're done with the good stuff. Anyway that's all beside the point as Hip Death Goddess is a stellar tripped out acid rock epic. This jam could have continued for another 10 minutes and I wouldn't have minded at all.

  1. There was this whole Bosstown thing the record industry tried to hype - I guess the East Coast's answer to San Francisco, Boston being a town with a lot of college students. But it completely flopped. I can't remember the names of the other groups though apart from Beacon Street Union (named after a street in Boston) and who had at least one great song https://youtu.be/VLag7GOBXQM

  3. Other Bosstown Sound luminaries - Orpheus, Chamaeleon Church, Kangeroo, Eden's Children, Earth Opera, the Tangerine Zoo, the Art of Lovin', Ill Wind, Apple Pie Motherhood Band, Fort Mudge Memorial Dump...

  4. I've actually sat through Beacon Street Union's coupla albums before.

At the start of the track "The Clown Died in Marvin Gardens" you're thinking why am i bothering with a tepid Love retread but by the end it has weaved a kaleidoscopic spell upon you.

It's the sort of thing early Mercury Rev might have been influenced by. Actually now I'm now wondering if perhaps they were the catalysts for me discovering these LPs in the first place back in the 90s.
