The Jacksons featuring Michael Jackson - Show You The Way To Go

"They" can smear MJ all they want but a massive part of the population know he is still the king of pop and all the unkind words in the world will not change their love for him.

After The Jackson 5 left Motown they changed their name to The Jacksons and signed to Philadelphia International. This Gamble & Huff tune is one of the most lushly lovely tunes Michael Jackson ever did. A total nitrous oxide marshmallow: Luxuriant mellifluousness.

Peak R&B!

The Exciters - Movin' Too Slow

The Exciters - Movin' Too Slow (1969)
We all know their ubiquitous hit Tell Him from 1962 but here's a later one from the same era as their single Blowin Up My Mind that's very fucking cool. This deep cut from the Caviar & Chitlins LP moves along at quite a pace and it's a hell of a satisfying ride. Pop perfection innit. I mean...just press play. Sometimes talking about music is dumb.

Sons Of Robin Stone - Got To Get You Back

Sons Of Robin Stone - Got To Get You Back (1974)
The Philly soul sound goodness is so good on this Bobby Eli production. Melodies in the 70s were just way more expansive and forthright weren't they? Conga, string and horn extravaganza!

The Dynamics - Yes, I Love You Baby

The Dynamics - Yes, I Love You Baby (1966)
This is such an inspired weird little jam. I'm pretty lost for words on this one...it just seems so instinctual, like it just came out like this and there was nothing they could do about it. It's fun raw off kilter minimal funky soul with a hint of rock'n'roll or just old school unreconstructed rhythm & blues. Whatever it is, it's pretty bloody infectious. Some absolute magic is captured right here on this platter.

Gwen Owens - Just Say You're Wanted (And Needed)

Gwen Owens - Just What You Wanted (And Needed) - (1966)
This on the surface sounds like just another Detroit mid 60s soul-pop number but it's also pretty insane. What is going on with the band? Sometimes it sounds like there are two bands playing and they're coming in and out of phaze. The drums are so unhinged they sound like they've dropped in from outer space or the studio next door or another song entirely. The bass also seems to be quite unruly, it wants to run off and do its own thing. It's all so deliciously spirited, I can't stop playing it. On top of all the crazy is Gwen's incredible voice. Like one of the great soul voices ever. Her timbre coupled with her restraint put her in an outstanding class. She could have been a huge star.

The Spinners - I'll Be Around

The Spinners - I'll Be Around (1972)
ALL of the Philly soul goodness. I mean this is just perfection innit. THE INTRO: Best ever! The ecstatic keys. Congas, congas, congas! Sweet soul vocal sounds of Bobby Smith. The toe tappin' tempo. That bassline. The ladies doing back-up. The guitar. The brief but brilliant string and horn sequence. The little organ swirls too. Everything. Written and produced by Thom Bell, thank you very much.

The fact that Bell uses all those elements and I'll Be Around sounds uncluttered and deceptively lean is genius.

Nolan Porter - If I Could Only Be Sure

Nolan Porter - If I Could Only Be Sure (1972)
Another one from the "wow" playlist. When this came on... just wow. That opening guitar line took took my breath away and my heart went funny. My body had a memory of this song before my mind did. A vibe like this is priceless, it's simply the best. All the elements are in perfect unison to create one of the greatest toe tappers in history.

My brain's not functioning beyond "ME like" today so it's handy that the fans of this very special tune in the comments are unusually articulate.

- A bass riff to die for...

- My world changes from winter blues to summer sunshine in just a few minutes...

- Absolutely stunning - beautifully understated - sends a shiver down my spine!

- Quietly addictive..and that opening riff! digs real deep!

- Great organ bridge moving to solo guitar...

- Proper music...

- So cool...

- This is faultless...

- Doesn't come any better. Pure 100% class...

- Sublime...

Nobody mentioned that insistent rhythm which makes If I Could Only Be Sure so joyously infectious.

Play it again Sam.

Mickey Moonshine - Name It You Got It

Mickey Moonshine - Name It You Got It (1974)
A fabulous toe tappin' symphonic-soul number that sounds like a Curtis Mayfield production but is actually some dude from Scotland. Everything here is just pop perfection. I was going through a mysterious playlist I'd created on youtube a while ago called "wow" and this popped up. So it was actually a "wow what a great tune" moment so I thanked my past self for compiling this list. I imagine this is some kind of northern soul classic.

Name It You Got It will put a smile on your face, a spring in your step and make you feel glad to be alive!...well for the duration of the track at least but hey that vibe just may stick with you for the rest of the day.

R. Dean Taylor - There's A Ghost In My House

One afternoon twenty years ago at work I had the Friday soul show on the radio and this song came on and blew me little mind. I always thought this was an 80s tune penned by The Fall and a fine one at that but no I was hearing an even better version from the 60s. This was a Holland/Dozier/Holland composition released on the Motown subsidiary V.I.P. Records in 1967. Weirdly it's performed by Canadian Motown hit Songwriter R Dean Taylor. It was not a hit though. However Ghost In My House was re-released in 1974 in the UK due to Northern Soul DJs giving it a thrashing at their amphetamine fuelled all night discos (Is that what they were? I'm no expert on this particularly English scene). It became a smash hit peaking at No 3 on the charts. Fans of freakbeat, 60s pop and soul rejoice, this is peak tuneage!

Insistence is brilliantly baked into the rhythm, melody and incredible vocal arrangement here.... that outrageous riff-age, underlying terror and those contagious hand claps are something else too... the sonic alchemy of synergy on display on this production is so damn infectious...REWIND!

Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons - The Night

SPACE DEBRIS GOES TO THE SOUL DISCO

I mean what can you say?! This richly melodic funky tripped out jam is just the best! It gets better and better as time goes on forever. All the elements of this meticulous arrangement combine to create pop perfection. It's beautifully balanced to be effective on both the radio and the dance-floor.

I never knew until one minute ago that Frankie Valli's glorious 1972 non-hit The Night was covered by both Soft Cell and Pulp amongst others. Me and Emma and Cooper (the dog) just had a boogie to this, you can't not!

*In 1975 The Night was re-released in the UK and became a top 10 record.
